Store-bought lotions can drain your wallet, and they often have harsh chemicals that can damage delicate skin. Making an organic lotion at home can be difficult, but follow these steps and you'll be making some quality lotion in no time!
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup of oil (almond oil works best)
- 1 cups of water (rose water also works)
- 2 tablespoons of shaved beeswax (note that bee allergy sufferers should not use this ingredient)
- 30 drops of essential oils (like lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot, or other oil.)
Steps
Making the Base of Your Lotion
- Pour the oil into a Pyrex measuring cup and then add the beeswax.
- Set the Pyrex container in a saucepan.Advertisement
- Fill the pan with water until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the Pyrex container.
- Heat on the stove. When the beeswax melts into the oil, remove the pan from the stove.
- Allow the mixture to cool for a minute, but be careful of the hardening beeswax.Advertisement

Community Q&A
- QuestionCan this lotion be used with a pump bottle?Community AnswerYes.
- QuestionWhat are some alternatives to beeswax?Community AnswerSoy wax, candelilla wax, and bay berry are good natural replacements.
- QuestionMust the lotion be stored in a glass jar? If so,why?Community AnswerNo, you can store it in a plastic jar or bottle as long as the jar/bottle is made of a plastic approved for food or cosmetic use. HDPE, LDPE, PETE, PP and many others can be used, however some people prefer to avoid these as they may leach unwanted chemicals into your lotion. You may also want to avoid it as essential oils often don't play nice with plastic, however when properly diluted in your lotion you should be able to safely use most plastic containers.
