How to Use Picture in Picture on iPad

Picture-in-Picture is an iPad video feature that allows you to watch a video while you simultaneously do other things on your iPad. To use Picture-in-Picture, open the video on a compatible iPad in an app that supports Picture-in-Picture. Tap the Picture-in-Picture button or press the Home button while the video is playing to pop the video out into a Picture-in-Picture window. While the window is open, you can move it around, resize it, and minimize it.

Part 1 of 3:

Starting Picture-In-Picture

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Ensure you're using a compatible iPad.
The Picture-in-picture (PiP) feature requires an iPad running a 64-bit processor, which means older devices are not compatible. At the time of this writing, the following iPads (and any newer ones) are compatible:[1]
    • iPad Pro (2015-2016)
    • iPad Air 2, iPad Air (2013-2014)
    • iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2 (2013-2015)
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Update your iPad to iOS 9 or later.
PiP was introduced in iOS 9. You can check for updates in the General section of the Settings app, or by connecting your iPad to your computer and opening iTunes.

  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Open a video app that supports PiP.
Support for PiP has to come from the app developers, so not all apps support PiP. The Videos app and videos played in Safari will work, as does FaceTime and Hulu. Many popular video apps don't support it, however, such as YouTube and Netflix.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Start playing a video.
You'll be able to select PiP once you have a video playing. If you're using Safari, you can play videos from web pages.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Tap the PiP button in the lower-right corner.
This will move the video to a smaller window in the corner of the screen. You may need to be in full-screen mode to see it.
    • You can also press the Home button to close the video app and the PiP window will appear with the video still playing.

Controlling Picture-In-Picture

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Tap the PiP window to make the control buttons appear.
If you've been doing something else on the iPad, tap the window to make the control buttons appear at the bottom.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Tap the Pause/Play button to pause or play the video.
This button is in the center of the row, and will change depending on whether the video is playing or paused.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Tap the PiP button in the window to return to the video app.
Tapping the PiP button will return the video to the app you started it in. The video will be restored to full screen.
  4. Step 4 Tap the "X" button in the PiP window to close the video.
The video will close immediately, and you'll be returned to whatever app you were using while watching the video.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Use the progress bar to see where you are in the video.
Unlike the progress bar in the video app, you can't move to different spots in the video. The bar in the PiP window only shows where you're at in the video.

Resizing and Hiding Picture-in-Picture

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Tap and drag the PiP window to move it.
You can move it anywhere on your screen by tapping and dragging the window.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Use two fingers to make the PiP window larger or smaller.
Place two fingers on the PiP window and move them apart to make the window bigger, or pinch them together to make it smaller.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Slide the PiP window off the screen to minimize it.
Tap and drag the PiP window off the side of your screen to minimize it. The video will continue to play and you'll still hear the audio.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Drag the tab to restore the minimized PiP window.
To restore a minimized PiP window, tap and drag the tab sideways to pull it back out.[2]
