Ordination and curacies

edit

We have a reference for his ordination as a deacon but do we know if he was then ordained as a priest? (It would be normal for a deacon of the C of E to be further ordained after one or two years.) Nedrutland (talk) 07:43, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Gliddon says the inscription on Vann's headstone was written by the Bishop of Peterborough, who ordained him on 22 September 1911 but as a deacon (according to Gliddon). I see you added a cite for the 1910 deacon ordination so I would suspect that Gliddon has it slightly wrong and the 1911 ordination was as a priest. Zawed (talk) 07:57, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
"The St. Barnabas Parish magazine recorded his welcome as assistant junior curate in November 1910 and in January 1912 congratulated him on his ordination to the priesthood." http://www.vconline.org.uk/bernard-w-vann-vc/4588385744 which would fit with ordination as a priest in December 1911. I have now added a contemporary newspaper reference for the Advent ordinations. I suspect his curacy at St Saviour's might follow his ordination as priest but can find no mention of it. B class. Nice work. Here is my only quibble. I can't seem to find the cited statement in the text for the following statement in the introduction. "He was the only ordained clergyman of the Church of England to be awarded the VC in the First World War as a combatant." Djmaschek (talk) 22:01, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Djmaschek, I had overlooked that. I have now added (and sourced) this point to the article. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 02:06, 20 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
