Wiki How:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sportspeople

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sportspeople. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sportspeople|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sportspeople. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Redirect to Slovakia at the 2014 Winter Olympics#Luge as ATD because I could not find any in-depth coverage about this luger to meet WP:GNG. All I found on news websites were passing mentions about his participation at the tournament. He was not even on top three luge winners. There are two interlanguage Wikipedia in Norsk Bokmål (Norwegian) and Slovak, the latter of which might help copy over English article, but neither said wiki's provide significant coverage. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. • Agree with the suggested Redirect. Only database sources can be found, no in-depth coverage, does not fulfill WP:SPORTSCRIT.
@Clariniie: if there is a viable WP:ATD such as a blank-and-redirect like here, you can be WP:BOLD and do it directly without going through AfD, especially if you think it's uncontroversial. Broc (talk) 15:52, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All I found on news websites were passing mentions of his participation at the tournament. He was not even on top three luge winners. This article has been deleted from Slovak Wikipedia on 18 November 2018, possibly due to BLP concerns. The only interlanguage wiki available is Norsk Bokmål (Norwegian) Wikipedia but it listed exactly the same sources as the English article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Fails WP:SIGCOV and WP:GNG. There doesn't seem to be anything here, and a single appearance for the North Korean national team in 2000 doesn't cut it. Anwegmann (talk) 07:18, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It does not appear that this player is notable on his own merit, beyond his connection to his father. If anything, this is way WP:TOOSOON, but I also think it fails WP:SIGCOV and WP:GNG on its own merits. Anwegmann (talk) 07:13, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

if there's Enzo Alves, why not him? Slancio2 (talk) 14:04, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Slancio2 we are debating whether to delete the page "Cristiano Ronaldo Jr" and not another one. If you think the article Enzo Alves does not fulfill notability criteria, feel free to nominate it for deletion. WP:WHATABOUTX is not a valid argument against deletion. • Comment: Notability is not inherited, but there isn't an insignificant amount of independent coverage (see Google News). C F A 💬 20:13, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to Cristiano Ronaldo#Family, children, and relationships Right now as-is the subject's career is fully tied to where their father is in the same way the son of Barry Bonds was in the 2000s as a batboy; there's really no 'there' to discern on a U15 team. One of the sources is fully disqualified as a clickbait 'how much is this child worth' article that's talking out of its you-know-what (it's zero. He's a kid.). Nate (chatter) 00:35, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep – Due to the player's passion, this article tends to be recreated over and over again. CR Jr. has some notability and the tendency is to increase. As pertinent as the nomination is, I don’t see it as a solution. Svartner (talk) 04:42, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment The proper time for article creation is likely to be if they earn a cap on the main squad, certainly not before that. Who their parent is doesn't give them a notability multiplier regarding article creation since they're still only on a U15 squad as part of a national league that is effectively on par with a local AYSO club. Redirect to List of Jersey women Twenty20 International cricketers as it fails WP:GNG. I am unable to find enough in-depth coverage of the subject to warrant a standalone article. JTtheOG (talk) 23:55, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Sportspeople, Women, Cricket, and Jersey. JTtheOG (talk) 23:55, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This article has sources including BBC, Jersey Evening Post and ESPNcricinfo and links to several other pages on Wikipedia. The subject is a player for the Jersey women's national cricket team with 19 caps including in a T20 world cup qualifying tournament. I was trying to create a complete set of pages for the Jersey women's cricket team excluding those players who have done nothing of note of course. Coverage of places such as Jersey is sparse so sources are often hard to come by. This does not make the subject matter irrelevant. Shrug02 (talk) 23:59, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: No significant coverage about this individual found. What's now used in the article is trivial coverage, name drops and twitter posts. I don't find anything we can use. Oaktree b (talk) 01:09, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words (it is truly appreciated and nice to read) but I'm just getting ahead of the curve. While other reviewers have seen no issue with any of them it seems I have fallen foul of one that sees no value in small places or sports not popular in certain parts of the world. I'm just saving them the time of hunting down my articles so they can have them removed. Shrug02 (talk) 17:09, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would ask you to focus on the content and not the contributor. If I "see no value in small places or sports not popular in certain parts of the world," why would most of my article creations be focused on exactly that? JTtheOG (talk) 19:28, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what articles you have created. I am only replying to someone who commented that my work had value. I'm more interested in adding to knowledge rather than removing it. I would rather not engage further with you as I found last night's interaction distressing enough. Thank you. Shrug02 (talk) 19:52, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article has sources including BBC, Jersey Evening Post and ESPNcricinfo and links to several other pages on Wikipedia. The subject is a player for the Jersey women's national cricket team with 11 caps including in a T20 world cup qualifying tournament. What is the problem with it? Shrug02 (talk) 22:23, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shrug02: How many of those include significant coverage of the subject? The number of caps and/or competitions played are not relevant. JTtheOG (talk) 22:58, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have added more information and sources as discussed with you. I was trying to create a complete set of pages for the Jersey women's cricket team excluding those players who have done nothing of note of course. Coverage of places such as Jersey is sparse so sources are often hard to come by. This does not make the subject matter irrelevant. I see you have now nominated a second of my pages for deleting and no doubt the rest will follow. I don't understand all these terms and abbreviations being used and I can't imagine I'll save them from deleting. I have worked for many hours to create these pages and in good faith. See WP:SPORTBASIC prong 5: "Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources." This one-sentence stub does not meet the standard. Cbl62 (talk) 16:06, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep I think the profile on Olympedia gives the WP:SIGCOV required. He was Italian champion and won a bronze medal at the 1973 Summer Universiade, see results. Broc (talk) 20:00, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here [1] coverage of him on the national press La Stampa about becoming Italian épée champion. Some passing coverage: [2] [3] [4]
Sources from 1976 are hard to find, that doesn't mean they don't exist... Broc (talk) 21:06, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Normanhunter2 did you look in Italian-language sources? Broc (talk) 21:07, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Olympia article is a dead link, it doesn't lead anywhere. I believe this article doesn't meet WP:SIGCOV either. Sourcing of BLPs have to be precise. The ones that Broc added seem to have more coverage of it, but is it significant enough to have the article stay on Wikipeida? Normanhunter2 (talk) 22:11, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please elaborate on how the La Stampa article does not show WP:SIGCOV? This is an article on national press, entirely dedicated to the subject who just won the national tournament of his sport, detailing his previous career achievements and his personal life. Broc (talk) 06:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On the personal life section, it says he studied at a university, this is too broad, and it won't stand even with a reference without a specific pinpoint of what university the person studied at.
The newspaper link you've sent here is probably the only significance this person has on Wikipedia, nothing else. Normanhunter2 (talk) 18:17, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can you explain what you mean by "it's too broad, it won't stand"? And how is the content of the page related to the notability of the subject? The article content does not determine notability, see WP:CONTN. Broc (talk) 21:22, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any real attachment to the article subject, and while I can't resist a chance to save an article with last-ditch citation adding (I've succeeded before) there's no point in preserving an article for a person whose entertainment career never really took off. I am not sure this individual meets the General notability guideline. The main claim to notability is that he played for his country in 2016. This claim is not supported by reliable sources. I did some searching and found sources such as ESPN and GSA which mention the lineups without this individual's name in them. Even if if we can establish that this person made a substitute appearance in a single non-competitive match, I feel this is still not enough for notability. C679 09:25, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maxim Novoselov has never been ranked in the top ten, has never beaten a notable fighter (or one with a winning record for that matter), and hasn't fought for any notable promotions/events. Checking his Russian Wikipedia his biggest claims to fame are almost fighting Viacheslav Datsik, getting jailed twice, and setting up a small club in prison. The article is currently orphaned as well. User:ZenZekey (talk) 07:57, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. I think the article relies pretty much solely on this source, https://www.sports.ru/tribuna/blogs/autoblog/1020556.html, which covers the subject extensively and is solely about the subject but does not seem to be a reliable source (it's essentially a blog post). Everything else consists of passing mentions or profiles on sports pages which every martial artist has regardless of notability. I did find this source https://fighttime.ru/news/item/30275-boets-maksim-novoselov-osuzhden-na-pyat-let.html?rand=19907 which appears to have several similar articles around the internet of him being arrested again. It also sounds like he won the European Sambo Championships in 2007 according to this: https://mma.bg/novini/mma-novini/maksim-novoselov-se-vrashta-v-zatvora-zaradi-iznasilvane Spiralwidget (talk) 16:07, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment It's hard to evaluate the quality and reliability of these sources. I'll admit to being skeptical about them, but I'm open to being convinced (which is why I didn't vote yet). According the FIAS, the world sambo organization, he's never competed at a world championship and the European sambo association's webpage only has results back to 2010 so I can't confirm his European title. Fightmatrix.com shows his highest MMA ranking was 110th, but he never fought another ranked fighter. He certainly appears to be a scary guy you wouldn't want to cross, but I'm not seeing anything that meets any WP SNG criteria. The question is whether or not he meets WP:GNG. Repeating my reasoning from 2021, but WP:NBASE now no longer exists:

Not notable. I cannot locate stats or a roster spot for this person on seamheads.com or cnlbr.org or baseball-reference.com. (B-R "Bullpen" [an open wiki] has an article created at the same time and same person that created this article.) The given source is an obit [11] that vaguely refers to playing on a Negro league team at some time. The given team ceased play in 1951 when the subject was 20, but as I stated, I cannot find any other source backing this up. • That leading Australian newspaper archive Trove brings up NOTHING for "Ted Pierce polo" has me suspect that he was known under some other name or something. I also think that there's a good chance there's sigcov in Water Warriors, a 600-page book chronicling the Australian Olympic water polo team, especially given that he seems to have been one of the more prominent players as he was chosen for three Olympics (he is mentioned in the book). BeanieFan11 (talk) 19:53, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Trove is extremely limited from 1954 onwards. And this guy was in the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics. Using online newspaper sources for this era in Australia is useless. This article does not meet any notability standards. The most notable thing about him is that he is the father of two players, but this is Wikipedia, not WikiTree. That he managed a high school team may get him some mentions in newspaper articles, but where those don't relate to his more famous sons, they are "local newspapers", which also don't make him notable. The rest is best handled on his sons' pages. Renerpho (talk) 22:47, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly siginficant figure in Jamaican football. Article needs improvement, not deletion. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 22:26, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Das osmnezz: GiantSnowman probably was aware of those, as they and I discussed them here previously. The article [19] is about him leading his High School team to victory. That's hardly significant. [20] and [21] definitely would be significant, if anything had ever come of those ideas. Someone's grandiose plans to take over Jamaican football, even if announced in local newspapers, amount to little if none of them ever come true. The only notable thing that Craig Butler has done was being the adoptive father of Leon Bailey. Renerpho (talk) 23:00, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the article has been improved greatly over the past couple of days. Compare what it looked like a week ago.[22] Once you remove the fluff and the WP:BLP issues,[23] not much remains. Renerpho (talk) 23:06, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @GiantSnowman and Anwegmann: Some coverage: Shaw Network, Daily Herald (2), Portsmouth News (2). Thoughts? BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:22, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for posting these. I saw the first three when I was initially nominating the article. The problem with these is that they are focused almost entirely on his signing a professional contract and are very much local coverage—his hometown newspaper(s). This is hardly sustained coverage or, in my view at least, significant, meaningful coverage. The fact that the event these article cover happened, but then he went on to have a very brief career with no league appearances and no coverage at all makes me feel like it doesn’t/shouldn’t suffice for WP:SIGCOV. That said, I’m certainly open to other opinions on this. Thanks, again. Anwegmann (talk) 03:01, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No issues with 'local' news per se - but to analyse the sources: Shaw Network is paywalled but what is available is a bit routine; DH 1 looks OK; DH2 is routine; Portsmouth News 1 and 2 routine. It's essentially all 'look at this American who signed for an English soccer team'. GiantSnowman 17:33, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I now sincerly reach out to editors like UtherSRG with a question of what's more to add. Everything is in there; primary sources, local sources, stats database sources, routine match coverage sources, indepth match coverage sources. And even if someone would remark on there being only two scores you should keep in mind that one score is for $5,000,000 - and is a second place in the main event (world championship) - and the other is a win in a WPT Main Event (the largest set of tournaments next to the World Series of Poker) - both these scores alone should merit inclusion. An article on this mixed martial artist was deleted three years ago after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Denice Zamboanga as failing to meet either mixed martial arts notability or general notability. At the time, there were also multiple drafts, probably because someone was trying to game the system. The originators were then blocked for sockpuppetry. This article does not differ materially from the deleted article. The subject still is not top-ten-ranked, and so does not meet mixed martial arts notability. The article does not speak for itself and explain how the subject meets general notability. The subject's association with the ONE Championship is now verified, but "so what?", participation in the ONE Championship is not grounds for notability. The article has been reference-bombed, but nothing in the article refers to significant coverage in an article that does not speak for itself. This article differs enough from the deleted article so that speedy deletion is not in order; but it does not differ enough from the deleted article to avoid deletion. Source #4 is her brother talking, and the subject is only namedropped. Source #8 interviews her, and almost entirely consists of quotes from the subject. Source #9 ... inquirer.net is a reliable source, but that's a scanty article consisting of five sentences aside from quotes from the subject, and that barely scrapes by if at all. #20 looks like a good source. #24 is scanty routine sports coverage. I'm not digging deeper one way or another, but they're weak reeds to hang a keep. Ravenswing 02:52, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comments She has never met WP:NMMA. The first source mentioned above is an article about her brother, she is mentioned in passing because she was on the same fight card. The next three are pre-fight articles about her first match in the promotion's Grand Prix tournament (which would be typical coverage for any fighter). The final reference is a report on that fight, which she lost. Even if you believe that coverage is significant, it is all about one event. Didn't check other references, so I'm not voting yet. • Weak Delete: She quite clearly does not meet WP:NMMA, and as for WP:GNG, there are a few reliable sources, but not enough content is from them to justify notability, and too much comes from name drops/non-independent sources. — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 17:12, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete It's clear she doesn't meet WP:NMMA or WP:ANYBIO, so the question boils down to meeting WP:GNG. I commented earlier on the existing references at the time. Since then user Let'srun added two sources from the week preceding her last fight--the first is that she's training with her fiance and the second is standard prefight coverage about her bout with a completely unranked (by fightmatrix) fighter who took the fight on two weeks notice. The three sources mentioned by Oaktree_b are another pre-fight article on the same fight, that fight's result report, and that the currently injured One promotion champion is willing to fight her "dearest friend" for her title when she recovers from injury (which all sounds promotional and not-independent to me, especially given she's already got a fight scheduled for September). I see lots of coverage in terms of number of articles, but everything seems to be typical coverage that any pro MMA fighter would have. She is currently ranked 41st in the world and has never beaten a top 25 fighter, so there's nothing to distinguish her from other aspiring fighters. She's had 5 fights (3 wins, 2 losses) since the article was previously deleted so it doesn't appear that much has changed. She may become notable, but my crystal ball simply isn't that good. Papaursa (talk) 11:13, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nenea hartia: Thanks. Do you know if the "Yearbook of the Hungarian Olympic Academy" is independent of Holéczy? BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:07, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BeanieFan11: Yes, it is an official annual publication of the Hungarian Olympic Committee. If it has been published by the Olympic Committee it is primary, if it has been published by an unrelated publishing house it is secondary. More importantly: is it significant or a passing mention? (Same with the 300 hits. Many of them would be mentions) Geschichte (talk) 08:32, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd prefer to keep, however if not, suggest a redirect to the club page Scarborough F.C. His name is mentioned four times on the page, twice as player of the year and twice as manager. As the content on the article is sourced, it maybe a good idea to merge some of the content. Deletion doesn't help anyone. Govvy (talk) 10:42, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Seems to have been pretty prominent; though searching isn't helped by the fact that the same team had another prominent Harry Dunn at the same time... There's an interview here, and while an interview, it does note that "Harry became a legendary player for Scarborough Football Club. ... Harry Dunn, in what was a 22 year period from 1965 to 1986 you played over 900 games for Scarborough FC, you scored many goals and created many more. You had well over twice the number of appearances of any player in the Club’s history and well over three times the number of appearances by any local player. You have been described as: -the ever present Harry Dunn -competent, reliable and dependable -a calm presence on the field -a gentleman on and off the field – everything that was needed for a team captain to lead Scarborough Football Club to the success it enjoyed and particularly to those Wembley victories." Also some briefish pieces on him: [42] [43] [44] [45]. Kind of expected more... BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:06, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
