Vera Bergkamp

Dutch former politician and LGBT rights activist

Vera Alida Bergkamp (born 1 June 1971) is a Dutch politician. She is a member of Democrats 66 (D66) and was president of the House of Representatives from April 2021 to December 2023.

Bergkamp studied human resource management at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and public administration and political science at the Free University Amsterdam.[1]

She had several jobs in the field of organization and management, among other things as a human resource manager at the Social Insurance Bank. Besides, she was chairwoman of LGBT rights organization COC Netherlands.[1]

From March 2010 to September 2012, she was a member of district council Amsterdam Centre.

On 20 September 2012, she was sworn in into the House of Representatives. As an MP she was engaged in long-term care, COVID-19, regulation of hemp cultivation, and family law, especially LGBT rights.

On 7 April 2021, she was elected president of the House of Representatives, defeating incumbent president Khadija Arib (Labour Party) and challenger Martin Bosma (Party for Freedom).[2]

Vera Bergkamp is from paternal side of Moroccan origin and was born and is still living in Amsterdam. She is a lesbian and married to a woman; together they two daughters.[3]
